Chippenham Club Racing

So now with the car built, and some Mini racing under my belt, I was told by John Ridding and Andy Travis that there is an RC club not very far from where I live that races Minis. Earlier this year, I went along to see what it was like and to meet and talk to the other drivers that I might be racing against.

Super Production Cup - Yateley & Colchester

My family is a racing family. I met my wife racing RC cars, so we both actively race RC, as does my father-in-law. My daughter, although only 13 months old, is familiar with a transmitter and I expect she will be tagging allong with me at RC meetings in the future. With this in mind, I bought and built the M-05 as a car the family (my wife and I for now) could use and race.

Tamiya M-05 Pro Electrics & Body

In the last of my posts about the build of my M-05, I'm covering the install of the electrics and the choice of body. In the past I've also raced 1:12 scale circuit so I had a very good ESC ('Speedo') in my pitbox ready to drop into the M-05. That speedo is the Nosram Dominator Evolution, which is getting on a bit now as speedos go, but for a brushed ESC is as good as any other. One downside to it though is that it doesn't have a LiPo cut-off facility..

Tamiya M-05 Pro Chassis Build

Well, these next few posts are a bit overdue – my last post was in June, and the car has been built and raced 3 times since then. Still, I kept some photos from the chassis build and from assembling the car to be ‘race-ready’ so I’ll show you them and try to give a little information as to how it went together.

Yeah Racing M-05 Aluminium Steering Set

Continuing on from my last post, the chassis is now built – complete with a new standard Tamiya gearset and rebuilt diff. The two halves have been fixed together and the rear part of the chassis has been attached, being careful to select the right wheelbase according to my preference (MWB). I'm nearly ready to attach the steering assembly.

Building the Tamiya TRF Mini (#54000) Shocks

When I bought the M-05, I realised it had a set of shocks that, while better items than what is supplied with the kit, seemed of poor quality. From reading various blogs and forums on the internet, I decided it would be better to get a decent set of shocks on the car that I could strip and repair.  The shocks I chose are the Tamiya M-Chassis Shocks (part number #54000).

Building the Tamiya M-05 Ball Differential (#54194)

When I bought the Tamiya M-05 PRO (second-hand) I realised during the strip-down that it had a M-05 Ball Diff (Tamiya Part #54194). Unfortunately the diff outdrives on the diff were badly ‘notched’ so would need replacing. I couldn’t find identical replacements but I did find these outdrives which are identical with the exception of being made from hardened steel.

I built the diff as per the instructions...

Mini Racing

Hi and welcome to my blog. This blog is about my experiences in RC racing, in particular the 2WD Mini Class where cars like the Tamiya M-03, M-05, and Xevo Triumph are the dominant chassis. From time to time, I’ll also feature some of the other RC interests I have.

Right now, I’ve just bought a Tamiya M-05 PRO, which is a FWD Mini chassis. I’m intending to build it so my wife and I can race it in the SPC-UK series and the CWIC series later this year.

I’ve already stripped the car down. I found when I stripped the car down that it had a ball diff, the M-05 Ball Diff (#54194) which is a hop-up option for the M-05.  To ensure that the car is built correctly down to the last bolt, I’ve also stripped the diff down – my next post will go through the diff rebuild.

Over the next few weeks, I’ll cover the rest of the build. I’ve bought a few hop-up options for the M-05 that I’m going to fit and I’ll cover these too.

So what can you look forward to? Well amongst other things:

1. Tamiya M-05 Ball Diff (#54194) Rebuild
2. Building the Tamiya M-Chassis Shocks (#54000)
3. Chassis build
4.Aluminium steering rack build
5. Electrics install
6. Body

I hope you enjoy the blog and I also hope what I write is helpful to those of you who like me, are new to the Mini class. My blog is not intended to be a guide to building Minis, it’s purely a record of what I’ve done and what I think. Please feel free to comment on anything you don’t understand.
